Senior Division 2 league Drumgoon 0 – 12, Knockbride 1 – 08
Played in perfect conditions on Boyle Park, Drumgoon just about deserved to shade this encounter, albeit by the narrowest of margins.
Drumgoon got off to the better start but after that it was nip and tuck for the hour as the sides exchanged point for point throughout the game. With Jim Mc Nally and Michael Mc Donald shading it at midfield the Drumgoon forwards started with plenty of possession. First on the scoreboard was an excellent long range point from an in form Niall Fortune. After good work in defense by Michael Hannon, Keith Fannin, raced up the left hand side and skillfully shot over the bar.
Another Drumgoon attack resulted in a point from Paddy Mc Cabe. Knockbride then struck back when the evergreen Peter Reilly, cleverly set up Adam Traynor, for a well taken goal, and bring the sides level. Drumgoon edged in front again when Paddy Mc Cabe coolly slotted over a well taken free. Adam Traynor was in devastating form for Knockbride and he kicked two more good points to give his side the lead. Drumgoon struck back through Niall Fortune to level the scores level at half time. The second half continued in a similar vein, with the corner forwards dominating. Drumgoon got their noses in front through two well taken frees by Paddy Mc Cabe.
However Knockbride were determined to win this game and points from Peter Reilly and Raphael Rogers brought the sides level again. Drumgoon restored their lead when the youthful full forward, making his senior debut, Conor Moynagh, shot over the 50 meters line. Good work by Ollie Mulvey set up Adam Traynor for two more points and much to the delight of the large crowd, Knockbride took a one point lead. Drumgoon were lucky that they had Niall Fortune back in their ranks as he not alone shot over the leveling point but topped it up immediately after with another well taken point and restored Drumgoon’s lead. Drumgoon made a number of positional changes with Conor Moynagh moving back into defence and Keith Fannin moving up into attack.
Keith won a good ball near the corner flag and was brought to the ground. Referee Gerry Sheridan has no hesitation in awarding a difficult free in from out close to the side line. Paddy Mc Cabe coolly slotted over the resultant free to edge Drumgoon in front once more. The final few minutes were feverously contested but neither side managed to register another score.
