Drumgoon Ladies win Intermediate League, 29/11/2003

Drumgoon 1 - 10, Butlersbidge 1 - 04

Drumgoon ladies captured the Intermediate league title in Virginia on Saturday evening last. Despite the inclement weather the pitch was in reasonably good condition and both ides played some fine football. Drumgoon got off to a dream start when they scored two goals from virtually their first attacks. Maria Clarke got onto the end of a long through ball from Ciara Farrell and she coolly slotted to the net. Not many minutes later Ann Smith found Theresa Clerkin and Teresa made no mistake from close range. With Margaret Mc Bride sweeping up everything in defence Drumgoon continued to attack the beleaguered Bridge defence in which Laura King and Mary Sweeney were trying hard. Drumgoon were making the better use of the long ball and Maria Clarke was fastest to re-act to another through ball and she drove the ball hard to the lower right hand corner of the net. Ann Smith added a point for Drumgoon before the Bridge got their only score of the first half. The score came from a well taken free by Ciara Farrell. The Bridge were unlucky not to close the gap when a pile driver from Grainne Smith came back off the crossbar and the same player narrowly drove wide minutes later. Drumgoon for their part could do no wring at the stage and Ciara Farrell added two further points for the victors. One of these scores was from the top drawer when she won the ball while on the ground got up turned around and drove over from long range. Mags gets the Cup
At the interval Drumgoon were in a commanding 3 - 3 to 0 - 1 lead. The Bridge did try hard at the start of the second half but found Catherine and Margaret Mc Bride in great form as were their two wing backs Lisa Murray and Sarah mc Cabe. Sarah worked tirelessly throughout the hour and her hard work was duly rewarded when she stole forward to earn a free. Nicola Clegg expertly drove over the resulting free. Indeed Nicola had her shooting boots on and it didn't matter which side of the posts she was as she shot over three more points from frees to break the Bridge resistance. The Murray sisters added points for Drumgoon before the Bridge made a belated comeback. Ciara Farell shot over from a difficult angle and Grainne Smith added another point fro the Bridge. Grainne Smith done well to lob the goal keeper from a long way out for a goal but it was too little too late as Nicola Clegg had the last score of the game for Drumgoon. Chairman Fintan Tierney presented the cup to winning captain Margaret Mc Bride. Margaret thanked the Bridge, the Virginia club who had the pitch looking so well, team mentors, Paul Mc Cabe, Niall Crosson and Jim Mc Nally and team sponsor Charlie Coyle.

Drumgoon 1 - 12, Knockbride 1 - 09

Drumgoon deservedly led Knockbride from start to finish in this exciting ladies 9 a side semi-final of division one. Drumgoon put in a solid all round team performance started brightly when Teresa Clerkin skilfully shot over the bar. Drumgoon added two further points through Nicola Clegg before Knockbride opened their account through Carmel Mc Cabe. Margaret Mc Bride was in devastating form at centre half back and she still found time to steal forward and get the next score. Ann Smith set up Ciara Farrell to shoot over from close in. Knockbride had further points from Carmel Mc Cabe and coming up to half time, a great move involving Sarah Mc Cabe and Ciara Farrell resulted in Nicola Clegg crashing the ball to the net to leave the scores 1 - 5 to 0 - 5 at half time in Drumgoon’s favour. Knockbride started strongly in the second half and went all out to score a goal. However they found Siobhan Mc Gorry in the Drumgoon goals in great form as she made save after save. She stopped a pile driver from Claire Murtagh and shortly afterwards was quickly off her line to smother an effort by Lisa Mc Cabe. Having survived the Knockbride rally Drumgoon then got on top with Ciara Farrell shooting over four points in a row. Arlene Clarke and Lisa Mc Cabe replied for Knockbride and Drumgoon fought back again with Ann Smith shooting over. With time running out Claire Murtagh burst through to score a goal. Hurling League
Drumgoon 0 - 04   Mullahoran 1 - 02

On Saturday afternoon 15th November, Drumgoon took on Mullahoran St. Joseph's in the senior hurling league in Boyle Park, Drumgoon. The teams were evenly matched from the throw-in to the final whistle with only a point or two between them throughout the game.
Aiden Fitzpatrick opened the scoring with a point from play just minutes into the game from 65 metres out. This was answered by Mulla-horan St. Joseph's Dominic Crudden when he sent a long ball from 40 metres over the Drumgoon bar which was the only score for his side in the first-half. Enda Sheridan jnr. added to Drumgoon's score with a point from 30 metres out and just seconds from the end of the first-half Aiden Fitzpatrick struck again with another well-taken point from a 65 metres free. Half-time score – Drumgoon 0-3, Mullahoran St. Joseph's 0-1.
The second-half saw an important change in the Mullahoran Saint Joseph's side when Sean Farrell replaced Eddie Brady at full-froward and with just minutes into the second-half Sean connected on a ground ball in front of the Drumgoon goal and sent it to the back of the net.
Enda Sheridan jnr. put Drumgoon back in the game when he caught a high ball 40 metres out from the Drumgoon goal and sent it high and over the bar. The sides remained level up to five minutes of the end of the game and when everyone thought a replay was going to be the result Sean Farrell struck again with a well-taken and most important point from 30 metres out.
Final score: Mullahoran St. Joseph's 1-2, Drumgoon 0-4.

Under 16 Championship
Drumgoon 1 - 08   Mullahoran 2 - 02

In the proverbial game of two halves, Drumgoon girls overcame a gallant Mullahoran team in a pulsating game of football. The two sides had drawn in their first meeting and once again, there proved to be nothing between the sides. Mullahoran dominated the first half while Drumgoon dominated the second. Mullahoran got off to the perfect start scoring a goal from practically the throw in. They add on two points before the flying Fiona Murray opened the scoring for Drumgoon. Mullahoran added another goal though Mona Sheridan to leave the scores 2 - 2 to 0 - 1 at half time im Mullahorans favour. Drumgoon team manager Declan Mc Cabe re-shuffled his pack at half time with the desired results.
Drumgoon with Niamh Farrell and Sarah Mc cabe controlling things around the middle slowly got on top. Points from Siobhan Mc Gorry and Cliona Farrell brough them back into the game. Tenacious defending by Sinead Mc Donald and Grainne Boyle kept the tide at bay. points from Tara Cunningham left them two points in arrears. Sarah Crowe scored what looked like a good goal but it was dis-allowed. Then Cliona Farrell raced in from the left to drive to the net much to the delight of the home support With time running out wing back Doireann Farrell stole forward to shoot over and seal a well deserved win.

Ladies Intermediate Championship Final
Drumgoon 1 - 06   Lurgan 2 - 09
A timely goal just prior to the interval by Claire Carpenter proved to be the launching pad for Lurgan as they survived the challenge of a gritty Drumgoon side in an entertaining Intermediate championship decider at Kingspan/Breffni Park on Saturday evening last. In a game in which goal chances were at a premium with the respective defences largely on top throughout. In the cold light of day, Drumgoon will wonder just how they managed to record 13 wides over the hour. They dominated the game throughout but sumply could not finish. The contest was a real war of attrition with individual battles plenty and intriguing as both sides gave it their all. Although the quality of the play didn't perhaps match the expectations of both camps, the game was nevertheless a fine contest with some fine individual displays adding to the crowd's enjoyment of the match. Although Nicloa O'Dwyer got Lurgan off to a flying start with a goal after just two minutes, stalemate became the name of the game in the first half with a plethora of wides from both teams. Drumgoon opened their scoring when Nicola Clegg converting a 22 metre free. Drumgoon proceeded to give as good as they got and a great move involving the inspirational pair of Margaret McBride and Ciara Farrell posed a serious threat only for the former to be penalised for over carrying when closing in on goal. A high ball into the Drumgoon square was punched to the net by Clarie Carpenter past the diving Siobhan McGorry in the Drumgoon goal. And things got even better for the winners moments later as they notched another point through Fiona Murphy to extend their lead to two goals, 2-1 to 0-1, at the interval.
Lurgan continued to force the pace on the restart but Drumgoon, with Margaret McBride expertly marshalling the defence, held firm to repel several threatening Lurgan attacks. However after their two early points, Drumgoon struggled to consolidate their bright opening on the restart with too often promising moves perishing on foot of poor deliveries forward. Still the tide did appear to be changing, especially when a shot by sub. Teresa Clerkin sailed beyond the outstretched arms of Lurgan 'keeper Anne McEnroe in the 8th minute. It was very much a case of game-on at this stage but Drumgoon continued to struggle to polish off some good approach work. Lurgan yearned for an outlet and Michelle Keating and Ciara Brady combined only for the latter to be penalised for over-carrying on the point of pulling the trigger.
Meanwhile at the other end, a classy run by Ciara Farrell and combination with Michelle Murray resulted in a free only for Aisling McDermott to pull the resultant dead-ball kick narrowly wide of the target. Lurgan made Drumgoon pay on the double as less than one minute later, Ciara Brady and Philly McDermott combined to set up Michelle Keating for a point to leave the Virginia-based side 2-3 to 1-2 in front approaching the start of the final quarter. Drumgoon continued to look threatening going forward but good blocking by the Lurgan defence allied to some rash kicking frustrated the yellow and blues in their efforts to get on level terms. Good work in the Drumgoon defence by Claire McCaffrey thwarted the in-running Claire Carpenter of a goal chance. At the other end another slick move involving Michelle Murray and Nicola Clegg saw Ciara Farrell race in on goal but her high shot went inches wide of the upright. Lurgan had to rely on swift counter-attacks at this stage and Philly McDermott was unlucky when her effort hit off the upright and went wide. Drumgoon hopes were raised when considerably when Michelle Murray made the most of good work by Ciara Farrell and Fiona Murray to point in front of the goals to leave just a goal between the combatants. The danger signals went off at the other end but Claragh O'Reilly miscued her fly-kick when racing in on the Drumgoon 'keeper. However the skilful Lurgan number 21 made her presence felt with two fine points as Drumgoon looked decidedly uncomfortably in going on a rare back-peddling exercise. Entering the final three minutes, the spoils still remained very much in the melting pot, but it was the winners who proceeded to finish like a Derby horse with four points on the trot, including a gem from Michelle Keating to seal a memomorable victory.

Ladies Intermediate Championship
Drumgoon 1 - 09   Erne Gaels 0 - 11
In a pulsating game Drumgoon just done enough to advance in the Championship by the narrowest of margins, after extra time. As with the first round there was nothing between the sides and the lead was exchanged time after time. On a beautiful evening on Boyle Park the large crowd got full vlaue for their money. Drumgoon started the brighter and ran into an early lead through Ann Smith. Aisling Mc Dermott had a further score for them before Bronagh Sheridan opened Erne Gales account. With Margaret Mc Bride in great form for Drumgoon they kept the pressure on the beleagured Erne Gaels defence. The Gaels drew level through Bronagh again and Drumgoon went ahead again when Ciara Farrell shot over two good points in quick succession. Her second score was a classic working out from the the Drumgoon keeper Siobhan Mc Gorry, who had a great game in goals through to Sarah Mc Cabe who sent the ball onto Ann Smith and into Ciara and over. At half time Drumgoon led on a scoreline of 0 - 05 to 0 - 04. Ann Smith who has endless energy, was in the thick of the action all the time and she got onto the end of a through ball from Michelle Murray to put Drumgoon further ahead. Erne Gaels fought back through Blathnaid Sheridan to level the score again. Katherine Mc Bride cooly cleared her lines and found Fiona Murray who despite her tender years took on the entire Erne Gaels defence and was unlucky to shoot wide. Claire Kearns had a point fro Erne Gales but once again Drumgoon responded with a similar score from the hard working Muireann Mc Dermott. Both sides had several chances to win the game in normal time but on an energy sapping evening were unable to convert their chances into scores.
After 120 minutes of football there was still nothing between the sides as they headed into extra time. In the first period of extra time, Drumgoon hit a purple patch and raced into a four point lead thanks to great finishing from Aisling Mc Dermott. Erne Gaels however were not going to give up without a fight and points from Brona Sheridan and Pam Fitzpatrick brought them right back into the game. With time running out they launched an all out assault on the Drumgoon goals but the defence with Claire Mc Caffrey and Nicola Clegg in great form held out for a memorable victory

Cavan Senior Championship
Quarter Finals
Drumgoon 0 - 03   Mullahoran 0 - 07
Drumgoon bowed out of the senior championship in Breffni Park on Sunday last against Mullahoran. The wet conditions and inexperience led to a low scoring game in which scores were at a premium. Drumgoon started off the better team and dominated the first twenty minutes. Jim Mc Nally was magestic at midfield and after a strong burst through the middle he opened the scoring himself for Drumgoon. The fast running Bryan Bates nipped through to get Drumgoon's second score and minutes later Paddy Mc Cabe shot over. However this was as good as it got for Drumgoon and Philip Brady then opened Mullahoran's account. Another point from Philip and Connie Mel Reilly left the scores level at three points each at half time. On the resumption the game became more physical and the youthful Drumgoon side were never allowed to develop their running style. Try as they might they could not get the scores on the board and on several occasions were very unlucky to see good play end up just going narrowly wide. Mullahoran also found it difficult to score but two 45's were converted by Danny Brady and a point from Christy Shields completed the scoring for them. Drumgoon will be dis-appointed with their performance but the side are young and are quickly learning what it takes to compete at the top level.

Cavan Senior Championship
Play Offs
Drumgoon 0 - 13   Knockbride 1 - 08
Drumgoon deservedly advanced in the Senior Championship on Sunday last in O' Reilly Park, Kingscourt as they outplayed their next door neighbours Knockbride. Drumgoon put in a good workmanlike performance and every player played their part in this memorable victory. Drumgoon started well and ran into an early lead through their influential midfielder, Jim Mc Nally. Niall Clerkin set up Paul Mc Cabe for the next score before Colm Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for Knockbride. With exchanges fast and furious, it was a game of nick and tuck in the first half as both sides swopped score for score. Philip Mc Dermott and Niall Clerkin scored good points for Drumgoon and Knockbride replied through Larry Reilly and Shane Reilly. Neither side were able at this stage to impose their will on the game as the scores continued to cancel each other out. Dashing wing back Keith Fannin sent over for Drumgoon and once again Knockbride replied through Larry who had a good game at full forward. Paddy Mc Cabe who covered every inch of grass in Kingscourt was next on the scoreboard and Shane Reilly replied for Knockbride to leave the scores at half time, 0 - 6 each.
Drumgoon started the second half in a determined mood and soon ran into the lead. Good work in the middle from Michael Mc Donald and Jim Mc Nally resulted in attack after attack by Drumgoon. Paul Mc Cabe had a good hour and after he was fouled Keith Fannin sent over the resultant free. Drumgoon introduced Ian Reilly who was fouled when going through and this time it was Paul Mc Cabe's turn to convert the resultant free. Paddy Mc Cabe shot over two points for Drumgoon and full back Colm Hannon on a typical burst forward shot over the bar to put Drumgoon into a five point lead. However Knockbride were not going down without a fight and Larry Reilly went on a typical Larry burst and shot a piledriver to the net. This score lifted Knockbride and points from Larry and Niall Reilly seen them draw level. Drumgoon however also were not going to leave the championship easily and fought back to go in front again when the youthful Michael Mc Donald shot over after some intricate forward movement. Another Drumgoon attack seen them make sure of the victory when Niall Clerkin put them into a two point lead deep into injury time.

Senior Championship

Drumgoon 2 - 08   Killygarry 1 - 05
On a pleasant evening in Breffni Park Drumgoon played some brilliant football at times to dispose of Killygarry in the senior championship. Drumgoon got off to a good start when Paul Mc Cabe shot over after a strong run up the middle by influential midfielder Jim Mc Nally. Bryan Bates, who had a great game on the forty was pulled down in the square and referee Martin Brady had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Up stepped Keith Fannin and he drove the ball low to the keepers left. The keeper made a good save and the ball rebounded off the post and out. Philp Mc Dermott was next on the scoreboard for Drumgoon with a good point and Niall Clerkin then cut in from the right to set up Bryan Bates for another point. Philip Mc Dermott was pulled down in the square and this time Keith Fannin made no mistake from the resultant penalty. One of the hardest workers on the pitch was Paddy Mc Cabe and he was duly rewarded when he shot over sweetly for a point. A strong run up the middle from Michael Andrew Hannon resulted in another point to leave the scores 1 - 6 to 0 - 3 at half time in Drumgoon's favour.
Drumgoon continued to play well in the second half and a good ball in from Michael Mc Donald found Bryan Bates, who cooly slotted to the net. With Drumgoon now gaining the upper hand all over the pitch, points from Ian Reilly and Philip Mc Dermott sealed Drumgoon's well deserved victory.

Ladies Intermediate Championship

Erne Gaels 2 - 03   Drumgoon 1 - 06
Ladies draw in Thriller
Drumgoon ladies staged a magnificent recovery to earn a well deserved draw with Erne Gaels in Belturbet on Saturday evening last. Erne Gaels got off to the perfect start when Brona Sheridan fisted a long range ball to the net. Brona Boyle added a point and then a long hopeful ball into the square deceived the Drumgoon defence and ended up in the net. Following a nervous start, the Drumgoon girls did not give up the fight and slowly battled their way back into the game. Good play by Caroline Galligan and Maria Clarke resulted in frees which Aisling Mc Dermott cooly coverted into points. The game was now being played with typical championship fervour and scores were at a premium as both sides now cancelled each other out. Ann Smith after a very good run out on the right set up Aisling Mc Dermott for another good point. Erne Gaels responded through Pamela Fitzpatrick to leave the scores 2 - 2 to 0 - 4 in the home sides favour at half time.
The second half was as keenly contested as the first and such was the form of the Drumgoon defence ably marshalled by Katherine Mc Bride at full back that the restricted Erne Gaels to a single score in the second half. Drumgoon slowly closed the gap and had their first score from Margaret Mc Bride following a strong run up the middle. With time running out the Drumgoon mentors of of Paul Mc Cabe, Niall Crosson and Jim Mc Nally, switched centre half back Ciara Farrell up to full forward with telling effect. Ciara won a good ball in from Muireann Mc Dermott and raced through to shoot to the net leaving the Erne Gaels keeper with no chance of saving. In the very next attack Ciara won the ball and quickly passed it through to the youthful Fiona Murray to shoot over the levelling score. Both sides still had chances to win the game and it took brilliant saves from both keepers, Siobhan Mc Gorry for Drumgoon and Karen Fay for Erne Gaels to ensure that the sides remained level.

Mullahoran 2 - 13   Drumgoon 0 - 11
Drumgoon put in a very good performance in Mullahoran on Sunday evening last and were unlucky to go down to two fortuitous goals. Right from the throw in, Mullahoran broke through for a goal. This set Drumgoon an uphill task which thay quickly climbed. There were exceptional performances from Jim Mc Nally and Philip Mc Dermott as Drumgoon got back to within one point of the locals. Drumgoon could have gone in front when a screamer from Paddy Mc Cabe flashed just wide of the posts. However a second goal near the end seen Mullahoran emerge as winners and keep their excellent home record intact.

Cavan Senior Championship
Round 1
Drumgoon 0 - 8   Knockbride 1 - 05
In O' Reilly Park, Kingscourt on Sunday 4/5, Drumgoon and Knockbride played out a very entertaining draw as Drumgoon contested their first ever senior championship tie. In a controversial game the match was turned inside out following the dismissal of county player, Larry Reilly. Up to this point Drumgoon were in control of the game and were in an albeit slender lead. The first twenty minutes of the game were pulsating as the two sides exchanged score for score. Knockbride were first on the scoreboard when Peter Reilly shot over a brilliant point from way out on the right. Drumgoon opened their account through a free from Ian Reilly annd went ahead through a point from Philip Mc Dermott. John Tierney levelled from a free for Knockbride following a foul on Larry Reilly after a mazy run.
Drumgoon went ahead though a well taken point from the strong running Paul Mc Cabe. A Peter Reilly free brought the sides level again before the incident that turned the match on its head took place. A strong burst upfield by Paul Mc Enroe resulted in a brilliant ball from Paul putting through Edward Jackson to shoot Drumgoon in front again. At this stage Drumgoon looked the more complete outfit and were slowly getting on top. However, following some alleged verbals, referee Noel Callan sent Larry Reilly to the line. It was several minutes before order was restored and straight from the resumption John Tierney burst through to set up Peter Reilly to finish cleverly to the back of the net. Drumgoon to their credit fought back from this adversity, re-organised their forces and shot two good points through Keith Fannin and Edward Jackson to leave the scores 1 - 4 to 0 - 6 in Knockbride's favour at half time.
Despite being a man down, the Knockbride defence performed heroics in the second half to keep the Drumgoon tidal wave at bay. Drumgoon launched attack after attack on the Knockbride defence but found difficulty in providing the final finish. Keith Fannin drew the sides level through a free after 10 minutes and Philip Mc Dermott shot Drumgoon in front with ten minutes to go. Several Drumgoon forwards had excellent opportunities of getting the winning score but as happens so often the 14 men held out.
Knockbride got their first and only score of the second half when Peter Reilly shot over after 25 minutes in a rare Knockbride attack. Drumgoon launched an all out assault on the Knockbride goals but could not break though for the score which they richly deserved. In the end both sides were happy to settle for a draw after such an eventful game. In the dying minutes Adrian Rogers was sent off for a second bookable offence. Drumgoon with Jim McNally and Edward Jackson in good form in the middle controlled affairs there, however the forward lines were guilty of some bad misses. On a day totally dominated by defences the forward lines found it difficult to make the breakthrough.

Best for Drumgoon:- Adrian Crosson, Keith Fannin, Jim Mc Nally, Paul Mc Cabe, Colm Hannon and Edward Jackson.
Best for Knockbride, Peter Reilly, Declan Reilly, David Traynor, Michael Clarke and Raphael Rogers

Ulster Intermediate Final

Sean Mc Dermott's 0 - 14 Drumgoon 0 - 7

Drumgoon went under to a more determined Sean Mc Dermott's side in Clontibret on Easter Monday in the Ulster Intermediate Club Final. Sean Mc Dermott's were on top from start to finish and were first on the scoreboard when Conor Mc Elvanney raced through to score straight from the throw in. Sean's dominated in every sector as Drumgoon never got to terms with the game. Sean's were sharper to every ball and Drumgoon never got to dominate at any stage. They did launch a determined comeback in the second half when Paddy Mc Cabe seen his pile driver rebound of the crossbar. However lady luck refused to smile this time on Drumgoon and Sean's forwards continued to torment the beleaguered Drumgoon defence. Good interplay from the Larkin brothers resulted in Sean's adding to their tally and at half time Sean's led on a scoreline of 0 - 8 to 0 - 4. Exchanges were keenly contested in the second half with both sides cancelling each other out. It was a full 15 minutes before either side scored and inevitably the score went to Sean's corner forward, Patrick Kieran. The game was highly entertaining at this stage as Drumgoon did their upmost to stage a recovery, but it was not be. James Coyle led his defence well and the Drumgoon forwards never eally got going. John Reilly had a fantastic game in goals and even seen a penalty from Damian Larkin go wide. Entering the final ten minutes Drumgoon did pull back a couple of late scores but it was too little and too late with Sean McDermotts deservedly taking the title.

Drumgoon in control against Killinkere
Drumgoon 7-11 Killinkere 1-03
On 15th April, Drumgoon's U12's entertained Killinkere in their second outing of the season. Both teams had tasted success in their opening games against Drung and Shercock respectively, and a fine evening on Boyle Park promised much.
Drumgoon opened the game in confident mood, with Paul Smith at midfield immediately striking over the bar to give the home side an early lead. On the kick out, another Drumgoon rally saw Dylan Bates convert a second point, followed by the opening goal from Ashley Boylan on the Drumgoon half forward line.
Buoyed up by an enthusiastic home crowd, Drumgoon continued to pressure a resilient Killinkere team. Solid work by the Killinkere defence slowed the pace of Drumgoon's advance for a short period. However, Dean Hand re-opened the scoring for the home side with an impressive point from thirty metres, followed by another point and well taken goal. Full forward Dylan Bates added a further point to bring the Drumgoon tally to 2-05, when Killinklere finally broke out of defence to register their opening score of the half. They added two more points to their half time total before Drumgoon closed the scoring with Aogan Farrell, Dean Hand and Ashley Boylan adding points, and Paul Smith scoring a fine goal, to leave a half time score-line of 3-08 to 0-3 in favour of the home side.
The second half saw Drumgoon pick up from where they left off at half-time. Points from Paul Smith, Fiona Smith, Gary Lavery, and goals from Aogan Farrell and Dean Hand ensured that a brave Killinkere team never got back into the game. The fact that they continued to mount attacks, and scored a fine goal in the second half bears testimony to the spirit of the Killinkere team.
The Drumgoon performance was a fine team effort. Always in control of the game, Ronan McDonald was secure in goal, dealing with any challenge that came his way. Ronan was ably supported by his full back line of Peter McGorry and Martin Fitzpatrick, who hardly put a foot wrong.
The half back line of Conor Moynagh, Mark Hartnett and Luke O'Brien controlled the flow and pace of the game, launching successive attacks into the Killinkere half of the field.
At midfield, Aogan Farrell played a Captains role, while Paul Smith continually pressured the Killinkere defence.
On the forward line, Dean Hand led the attack, with Ashley Boylan, Gary Lavery, Dylan Bates and Fiona Smith always threatening to score.
Killinkere, having beaten Shercock in the opening round, are obviously a team with potential. However, the pace, tenactiy and hunger of the Drumgoon team never let them find their feet in the game.
Drumgoon: Ronan McDonald, Peter McGorry, Martin Fitzpatrick, Conor Moynagh, Mark Hartnett, Luke O'Brien, Aogan Farrell, Paul Smith, Gary Lavery, Dean Hand, Ashley Boylan, Dylan Bates, Fiona Smith Subs: Mark Murray, Francis Mahon, Paula Hughes, Laura O'Hare, Lauren Kettyle, Daniel Boyle, Tommy McKitterick, Paul Daly, Declan Smith

Two goals from John Hillis sees Drumgoon win Thriller

In the proverbial game of two halves, Drumgoon defeated Drung in a thrilling match on Bolye Park on Thursday evening. Both sides gave their all, both sides have many fine players and in the end Drumgoon just about deserved to shade it.
Drung, playing with the breeze got off to a flying start and Barry Waters sent over some excellent long range points. Drumgoon could do little right in the first half and had to wait 15 minutes before an in form James Mc Donald opened the scoring for them. Further scores from Cathal Brady and Patrick Mc Entee seen Drung go into the break leading on a scoreline of 0 - 11 to 0 - 04. What a turnaround occured in the second half. Drumgoon with their traditional determination were not going to give up without a fight. Under 14 Boys A brilliant ball from Philip Smith found James Mc Donald and James cleverly finished to the net. Paraic Mc Gorry moved up from centre half back to centre half forward and scored several good points. Supersub Mark Harnett shot over to send Drumgoon in front for the first time in the match. The stage was then set for a grandstand finish.
Dashing wing forward burst through and shot Drumgoon into the lead with a well takne goal. Barry Waters broke back up the field and from a 14 yard free levelled the scoring. A long lob in from Michael O' Brien ended up in the back of the net to send Drumgoon back into the lead. From the kickout Drung struck again Patrick Mc Entee fisted to the net from close range. DRUMGOON in Ulster Final

DRUMGOON 2 - 11 CLANN EIREANN 2 - 10

Ulster Intermediate Championship - 23/2/2003

Drumgoon defeated the Armagh champions Clann Eireann in the semi final of the Ulster Intermediate championship on Sunday last in Clontibret. This was a pulsating game from start to finish between two fine footballing sides. Drumgoon have now gone undefeated for 19 championship games. They now carry the hopes of all Cavan in the Ulster final. The fortunes swung from side to side throughout this intriguing encounter. The Armagh boys started the brighter and their forwards moved with great pace and cunning. They got onto the scoreboard first through corner forward Ryan Henderson. With Drumgoon struggling in the middle Armagh added another score before Drumgoon's speedy full forward Paul Mc Cabe opened their account. Armagh struck back through Mark Beattie and Drumgoon kept in touch once again when Edward Jackson broke up the middle to shoot over. Coming towards the break, corner back Michael Mc Cluskey stole forward to shoot the Armagh side into a two point lead. Despite their dominance at this stage the Armagh side could never shake off the tenacious Drumgoon defence as they each manfully stuck to their task. Drumgoon then hit a purple patch to turn the tables. Edward Jackson found Philip Mc Dermott with an inch perfect pass and Philip raced forward to cooly slot home to the corner of the net. From the resultant kick out Philip was on hand again to send Drumgoon into the break with a two point lead on a scoreline of 1 - 4 to 0 - 5. On the resumption Drumgoon came out a new team. They totally took control of the game and for 15 minutes gave an exhibition of all that is good in football. Their team work, passing, work rate and finishing were all from the top drawer. With Jim Mc Nally and Edward Jackson geting to grips with the midfield job they both got on the score board and helped to set up chance after chance as they drove forward in waves. Anything passing midfield was instantly mopped up by the centre half back and deserving winner of the "Man of the Match" award Michael Hannon. Martin Clerkin on the forty had a tremendous game and his long ball into the square was cleverly finished to the net by Paddy Mc Cabe. With Drumgoon coasting suddenly the game turnd around completely. Clann Eireann broke forward and James Byrne shot to the net. From the kick out it was straight back in and into the net again by Ryan Henderson. The scene was set now for a grandstand finish. With five minutes to go and the sides level the tension in the huge attendance was palpable. With both sets of supporters urging on their respective side on the noise could be heard in Monaghan town. With two brilliant sides competing so well something had to give as they exchanged the lead and in the end it was Ian Reilly who came to Drumgoons rescue. Ian was in tremendous form and Drumgoon's last three scores came from his trusty boot. His final score came from a free after Colm Hannon had made a tremendous interception in the full back line. Colm then raced the full length of the field before being brought down just short of the other square. It was a shame that there had to be a winner and a looser as both sides were exemplary. Paddy Fox Memorial Tournament

Drumgoon 3 - 12 Carrickmacross 1 - 5
Drumgoon started off 2003, where they left off in 2002 with a win. Once again the lads put in a very good performance and showed that they all have wintered very well.
Carrick put it up to Drumgoon for most of the first half and it was very entertaining as play swung from end to end. Drumgoon got on top in the middle with the super fit, Paul Mc Enroe in great form. A sweeping run upfield by centre half back Adrian Crosson resulted in Adrian shooting to the net. From here on in Drumgoon took control of the game. Paul Mc Cabe in devastating form ended up leading scorer with a personal tally of 1- 4. Also back to this best was Martin Clerkin. Martin finished a great move started by Bryan Bates with a superbly taken goal. With six players missing due to county commitments, the new players in blended very well and showed that there is little to choose between the entire panel. What was particular pleasing to the management was the performance of the two youthful corner forwards, Michael Mc Donald and Niall Fortune. Despite their tender years, both players have great physical presence and made a good impact. Drumgoon now play Latton in the Final
