Referee Declan Mc Cabe looks on
|
Much has happened in our parish since we last hosted this tournament and once
again its that time of year again when we remember all the more vividly Killian
O Connell and the fond recollections we have of him. Here in Drumgoon and
in the neighbouring parishes, our aim, as the promoters of or national games,
should be the full and harmonious development of all our young footballers,
hurlers and camogie players. Although competing to win had a place in all
sports, personal development and the opportunity to engage with your peers
what really counts. Gaelic Games allow our youg people t learn respect for
each other, for their management team and indeed, for the oppostion. So a
positive ethos from us,their parents teachers and coaches, should be encouraged
at all times. This will be our legacy to them.
Patrick Bates. Chairman.
Drumgoon Juvenile GAA Committee.
Welcome to our sixth annual schools festival gaelic games. This tournament in memory of a talented young player has become
a central fixture on the Drumgoon club and Dernakesh School calendars. Recent reseach and analaysis in GAA activities
all point to the essential need for clubs to take great care of underage developments and to have positive links with the
local Nationa School. This year the recent loss of Canon Dessie O Dowd reminds us that, although life is fleeting, the
significance and impact of a life in any community, can be profound. In remembering Killian today, we remember all those
who have passed throug our lives .... and thank them for influencing ours.

Killian O’Connell Memorial Juvenile Football Tournament 2002
Boyle Park, Drumgoon was bathed in sunshine on Saturday 26th May as the local club hosted the fourth annual Killian O’Connell Schools Football tournament. An exceptionally large crowd attended what turned out to be a festival of Football, the young men and women of Drumgoon, Cootehill, Shercock, Kill and Drung provided a proud display of their abilities. The occasion was heightened by the presence of Keith Fannin and Edward Jackson, both offering time to this special event, before successfully engaging Down in the Ulster Minor & Senior Championship in Casement Park on Sunday.
Mary Ann Sherry Cup U10 Challenge
The first final of the day saw the Dernakesh U10 squad, take on a Kill/Drung selection. Energy, enthusiasm and no little skill were evident in this closely contested match. While there were no losers in this contest, it was Dernakesh that edged the result, with fine performances by Paul Smith, Aogan Farrell, Dylan Bates Conor Moynagh and Mark Hartnett, ably supported by Martin Fitzpatrick and Francis Mahon.
Killian O’Connell Girls Football Shield
The Girls Football challenge witnessed two of the strongest girls football teams in the county contest for the honours. The Dernakesh girls, coming off a solid run in the schools league were without a number of influential players.
The Lisboduff team had also shown impressive form in the schools 7 and 13 a-side tournaments. The contest proved equal to its billing. Lisboduff had the better of the early exchanges, with an unanswered goal and two points, before the Dernakesh girls registered a score. However, a goal on the stroke of half time brought Dernakesh back into match, and the contest was finely balanced for the second half.
It was the superior strength of the Lisboduff team, particularly in central defence and mid-field that proved decisive. As the second half wore on and the heat began to take its toll, Lisboduff scored the vital goal that gave them a five point advantage at the final whistle, securing for them the Killian O’Connell Shield.
Killian O’Connell Cup
The opening semi-final saw Dernakesh NS face St. Patricks, Shercock. Similar teams had met in the U12 League campaign, with Shercock winning by the narrowest of margins on that occasion. It was Dernakesh however, who were to prove more decisive and precise in front of goal, particularly in the first half, that ensured a seven point victory for Dernakesh on a scoreline of 3:10 to 1:09.
The second semi-final saw last years beaten finalists, St. Michael's Cootehill, facing a Kill/Drung team that formed the nucleus of the Kill U14 team that recently qualified for the League quarter finals.
The Cootehill squad, with the advantage of the breeze in the first half, secured an early advantage, and led by 3:03 to 1:01 at half time. But, after the interval, with the breeze behind them, the Kill/Drung team began to score freely, to come into sight of their Cootehill rivals. However, a ten minute spell in the third quarter in which Cootehill returned three un-answered points, was enough to see the return to the final to face Dernakesh.
Local Derby in Final
The decider was a repeat of the 2000 final, with Dernakesh facing parish rivals, St. Michaels, Cootehill. The early exchanges were balanced with opening points from Dernakesh, being cancelled out by the Cootehill forward line.
However, the physically stronger Dernakesh midfield pairing of Colm Smith & Conor Bates began to exert themselves, edging out the young Mark Mullen and Liam Walsh of Cootehill. At centre-half back, John Fitzpatrick controlled the play, cutting out much of the supply intended for the Cootehill forward line. He was ably supported by Eamonn McCluskey and Cathal Smith on either side. At full-back, Pauric McGorry was solid, in front of Killian Kelly in goal, supported by Paul O’Hare and Eugene Hughes.
In a free-scoring forward line, Adam Bates crowned a strong performance with an impressive goal, Killian Moynagh and James McDonald linked well with the running midfielders, and Philip Smith proved difficult for the Cootehill defenders to handle as did Tommy O’Brien, Brendan McCabe and Aogan Farrell when introduced.
Dernakesh ran out winners, retaining the Killian O’Connell Cup, by a scoreline of 3:11 to 1:05
For Cootehill, Mark Mullen and Liam Walsh performed strongly against physically opponents. Dermot Grogan contested well in defence, while the full forward line always looked capable of causing an upset.
Special Presentations
Special presentations were made to Drumgoon club-men Edward Jackson, Cavan Junior Player of the year for 2000, Aidan Fitzpatrick, Cavan Hurler of the year, and Aogan Farrell, to mark his elevation to the position of PRO, Ulster Council GAA.
In addition, a special award was made to tournament referee, Gerry McDermott (Kill) for his contribution to the tournament.
PROGRAMME FOR 2001
‘Excellence through youth development’
2001 has come, and indeed is almost half-ways gone. It’s that time of year again when we remember all the more vividly Killian O’Connell and all the fond memories we have of him. Here in Drumgoon and in the neighbouring parishes, our aim, as the promoters of our national games, should be the full and harmonious development of all our young footballers, hurlers and camogie players.
All should be given the opportunity to participate, and although winning is often seen as important, personal and team performance and the improvement of these elements, is what really counts.
By playing Gaelic Games, our young people should learn respect for each other, for their management team and indeed, for the opposition. So, a positive ethos from us, their parents, guardians, teachers and coaches, should be encouraged at all times. This will be our legacy to them.
Finally, many thanks for being here today, for taking part, and for remembering.

‘Killian O’Connell ..a life celebrated’
This tournament celebrates the life of Killian O’Connell. A life filled with youthful enthusiasm and a passion for Gaelic games. The ancient Greeks recognised the essential need to mix sport with intellectual pursuits. The Romans refined the notion and gave the world the renowned motto "Healthy body healthy mind"
Tragedy robbed a school, club and most importantly a family of a talented young life. Today we celebrate the joy and excitement of eleven well-spent years. Let us remember Killian through his sporting endeavour and above all do remember the philosophy of the Greeks. The wise Greek teacher Heroditus exhorted:
"Cherish your children every single day".
Yet another Greek master used admonish parents with the demand:
"How often have you embraced your child today?"
Let us cherish and embrace them daily. Value their every moment of living. It can and does have finality. Cherish them. Celebrate through sport. Our own Gaelic games provide an ideal vehicle. Dernakesh School are happy to be associated with this event. We wish it were not necessary yet the crucifixion of a man called Jesus 2000 years ago was strangely necessary. Sometimes there are deeper meanings beyond our comprehension.
Celebrate through sport today. Congratulations to all involved and yes do cherish them, every minute of every day.

The Killian O’Connell Cup The Teams
Dernakesh NS
The three times winners and holders of the Killian O’Connell Cup, Dernakesh NS have hosted this tournament since 1998. In winning last years tournament, Dernakesh were pushed all the way by St. Michaels, Cootehill in a thrilling final that ran to extra time, with Dernakesh winning by the narrowest of margins. Good performances at divisional level in the mini-7’s tournament in recent weeks positions them strongly.
Colours: Blue & Gold
St. Michaels NS, Cootehill
Finalists in 2000, Cootehill will be looking to go one step further this year. Cootehill and Dernakesh met recently in the Scoilsport Mini-7’s, with Dernakesh emerging victors. With full panels in operation in this tournament, Cootehill will be keen to make their mark.
Colours: Green & White Hoops
Shercock NS
Shercock last competed in this competition in 1999, and are always a considerable force to be contended with. Good form at U12 level suggests Shercock could be contenders this year. They will be keen to re-establish their tournament credentials this year, having won their own Damian McCann Memorial Tournament in October last.
Colours: Yellow with Green trim
Kill/Drung
An ‘amalgamated’ team drawn from the Parish of Kill/Drung, from pupils attending either Kill N.S. or Lisboduff. Kill were finalists in this competition in 1999, losing out on that occasion to a strong Dernakesh team in an exciting contest. The team will be keen to re-establish their presence in this competition.

Girls Football Challenge Shield
Dernakesh NS
Dernakesh have been an early force in school-girl football in Cavan, a feature that contributed significantly to the Drumgoon Ladies impressive double of League & Championship victories in 2000.
Lisboduff NS
The Lisboduff NS girls have shown good form this year in the Cumann na mBunscol tournament, and will look to impress in the Challenge Shield match.
U10 Football Challenge The Mary Ann Sherry Cup
Inaugurated in memory of the former owner of the site of Boyle Park, this U10 encounter reflects the close ties that exist between our local communities. Down the years, Drumgoon, Kill and Drung have combined, very effectively at minor and U21 level to form St. Finbarrs. Today, the stars of the future will shine as Dernakesh NS take on Kill/Drung. This now traditional U10 contest displays the real spirit of Gaelic Games, where youth, vigour, commitment and no little skill, are on display in abundance.
