Co. Cavan Cross Country Championships,


On Sunday last 22/9/2002, the local Athletic Club hosted the County Cross Country Championships on Boyle Park. The course, covering a 1km track, proved popular among the approximately 200 athletes entered. Best local performances saw Conor Moynagh win the U11 800m title, and Fiona Murray sprint to the U15 1500m title. Michelle Murray finished second in the Junior Ladies 2000m while Killian Moynagh finished third in the U15 boys 2000m.
Other promising performances saw the U11 girls team of Alice McCutcheon, Catherina Mullen, Grainne Smith and secure team bronze. Ryan Harkin finished a close fourth in the U11 800m, and the team (Conor Moynagh, Ryan Harkin, Cormac Roche, Aoghan McGoohan) took team gold. Eoin Roche, Tommie O'Brien, Brendan McCabe, Brian Crosson and Michael O'Brien packed well to take team silver in the U13 1200m, while the U15 girls squad of Fiona Murray, Caroline Mullen, Christine McCutcheon and Sarah Crowe took team silver.

Conor Moynagh wins the U11 800m Cross Country Championship at Drumgoon on Sunday 22nd September, ahead of Niall Coomey Balieboro. Ryan Harkin finished fourth, while the Cootehill/Drumgoon team take Team gold.

National Community Games Finals     26/8/2002


Congratulations to local athletes Heather McArdle, Dermot Grogan, Claire O'Brien, Niall Scorr, Christine McCutcheon and Colm Smith who won All-Ireland silver medals in the U15 mixed relay event in Mosney at the week-end. This adds to the bronze medal won in the Community Games Cross Country finals in Mosney by Killian Moynagh in May.
Also in action over the week-end in the Mosney Centre were Catherina Mullen (U8 80m), Conor Moynagh (U10 200m), Killian Moynagh (U14 800m), and Caroline Mullen (U16 1500m). Although finishing outside of the medals, each of the athletes performed strongly, and we can look forward to the upcoming athletics season with some confidence.
Athletics Training for ages 8 and up recommences this Saturday (31st August) at 11am in St. Aidans Sports Grounds.

All Ireland Track & Field Finals     22/7/2002
Paul Smith performed impressively and narrowly missed a medal position in the All Ireland Track & Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday last. Competing in the U12 60m sprint, Paul succesfully negotiated the heats and semi-finals to make the final. Running a personal best of 9.12 seconds, Paul finished a creditable fifth, one-tenth of a second behind the race winner from Ballymena. Also at the week-end, Damian O'Brien threw 13.59m in the U9 Ball Throw, in his first National Finals competition, to finish just outside the top ten..
This week-end, four other local athletes will compete in the second tranche of All-Ireland Finals. Dermot Grogan will contest the U15 Shot, and 100m, Siobhan McGorry will compete in the U15 Long Jump, Niall Scorr will compete in U16 100m, and Killian Moynagh will contest the U14 800m and 1500m, also in Tullamore.

Swimming Success     10/6/2002
Congratulations to Niamh Farrell, who took gold in the U16 back-stroke competition in the Co. Cavan Community Games finals held in Enniskillen on Saturday June 8. Niamh now goes forward to represent Cavan in the National Community Games Finals to be held in Mosney during August.
Ulster Track Medals for Dernakesh Athletes
Conor Moynagh won Ulster Bronze in the Javelin Throw event, and further qualified for the national finals in Tullamore in the 60m sprint. Paul Smith also won Ulster Bronze in the U12 60m sprint, and he too progresses to the national finals in Tullamore in July.

On Saturday 20th April, three local athletes attended the Co. Cavan Community Games cross country championships and trials for the national Cross-Country team events in May. Hosted by Innyvale on the Crosserlough sports grounds in Kilnaleck, the event attracted keen interest from around the County.

Fresh from his performance in the All Ireland indoor competition the previous week-end, Killian took an early lead and built upon this to comfortably win the event. Brendan McCabe ran a tactical race towards the front of the following field of athletes and in a fast finish, out-sprinted his rivals to take second place.
All three now go forward to represent Cavan in the national Community Games finals in Mosney on 18th & 19th May.

More All Ireland Success


The weekend sporting success of our Footballers was complimented by further All-Ireland action on the Athletics field by four Drumgoon Athletes.
At the All Ireland Community Games Cross Country championships at Mosney in Co. Meath, Conor Moynagh, Grainne Boyle, Brendan McCabe and Killian Moynagh lined out in the Cavan team colours. In a field of 28 teams and 168 athletes in the U12 Cross-Country relay, Conor Moynagh on the opening 600m leg, led his Cavan team to a credible 8th place finish. In the U13 combined cross-country event, Killian Moynagh led his team to qualification by winning the first of the 1200m semi-finals on Saturday. Club-mates Brendan McCabe and Grainne Boyle rallied strongly to bring the Cavan boys team into 2nd place and girls team into 4th place to secure qualification into Sundays final.
At Sundays 1200m final, in a field of 130 athletes, Killian ran impressively to cross the line in third place and win All Ireland bronze in an extremely close finish with athletes from Kerry and Limerick. Brendan McCabe again finished strongly in 46th position crossing the line as the third Cavan athlete, while Grainne was the fifth Cavan girl to finish. Overall, the Cavan squad finished sixth.
Killian's medal-winning performance created more Cavan athletics history by securing Cavan's first ever All-Ireland medal in Community Games cross country racing. At the following medal Ceremony, former GAA Chairman, Joe McDonagh in the presence of Sam Maguire (now living in Galway) presented Killian with his fourth All Ireland

Ulster Indoor Athletics:

Athletic Club Performs strongly at Ulster Championships

On March 2nd, 21 Athletes from the Athletic Club attended at the Ulster Indoor Championships and All Ireland Trials, at the Antrim Forum, near Belfast.

Niall Conlon competed strongly in the 12 Boys 60m and Long Jump, and ran a creditable 18th in the 600m.

Colm Grogan narrowly missed qualifying from his heat of the 60 metres. Brian Crosson used his cross country experience to finish in the top 20 in the 600m event, while Brendan McCabe made the top 10 in the same event. Mark Mullen used the 60m as a warm up event, and narrowly missed qualification in the 600m, finishing 5th overall in the time trials.

Lisa Kelly competed in the 60m and Long Jump, while Karen Kelly also cometed in the 60m Hurdles final.

Grainne Boyle had a fine run in the 800m to finish in the top 20, while Siobhan McGorry finished 6th in the 60m final and a creditable 10th in the 800m final. Clare O'Brien, Doireann Farrell and Fiona Murray all ran well to finish in the top 25 of a very competitive 15 Girls 800m, as well as promising performances in the 60m, High Jump and Long Jump.

Killian Moynagh took gold in winning the 14 Boys 800m Ulster title, and further tok bronze in both the Long Jump and 60m Hurdles.

Dermot Grogan was impressive in winning silver in the 15 Boys Long Jump, while also winning bronze in the Shot Putt and 60m sprint.

Sean Fitzpatrick was a solid silver medalist in the Boys 17 High Jump, while also qualifying in 4th place for the national finals in the Long Jump.

Brendan Conlon fulfilled his promise, taking silver in the Shot Putt, while Christine McCutcheon also qualified for the national finals with bronze in the Girls 15 Shot Putt.

In the final event of the day, the Girls 15 relay team of Clare O'Brien, Siobhan McGorry, Doireann Farrell and Fiona Murray narrowly missed qualification for the nationals, finishing 5th. Earlier, the Boys relay team of Killian Moynagh, Mark Mullen, Eoin O'Brien, Luke O'Brien and Brendan McCabe qualified in 4th place for the nationals in Nenagh.

Overall, nine athletes qualified to the National Finals in 11 events, to be held on the week-ends of 6th & 7th April and 13th & 14th April at Nenagh Indoor stadium, Co Tipperary.

Fifth Annual School Road Relays


On Saturday 16th February, the fifth annual Road Race & Relay Championships took place at Dernakesh NS, Maudabawn, Cootehill. Commitment, endeavour and boundless energy were the order of the day, as athletes sought to stake their claim on the School titles for 2002. Road Relays:

In the Senior mixed 2 x 400m relay event, Cliona Farrell ran strongly in the leading group alongside Tommie O'Brien, Sinead McDonald, Doireann Farrell and Darren O'Connell to hand over to team-mate Killian Moynagh. Doireann Farrell led at the hand over stage but Killian Moynagh ran strongly to take team gold, ahead of Siobhan McGorry in silver and Siobhan Smith edging out Michael O'Brien and Pauric McGorry to take her team into bronze medal position. In the Under 10 2 x 300m event, Grainne Smith started strongly, and maintained her advantage over Peter McGorry and Deirdre Mahon at the changeover, handing a ten metre lead to partner Ryan Harkin. Ryan ran strongly to hold the advantage through to the tape. Conor Moynagh rallied strongly, reflecting early season form to come through to second place, with Cathriona Carragher being edged out into third place. The Under 8 relay proved an impressive win for Orla Smith and Conor McGorry, in the 2 x 150m event. Pauric Lee and Katie Crosson were narrowly beaten into second place, while Lisa Hughes and Joseph Kelly held on for the bronze medal ahead of Leanne O'Hare and Ciara O'Hare. The Under 6 event was a straight 80 metre sprint, and amid much effort, Eimer Cooney took gold. Nicole Igoe rallied in the closing stages to win silver and Sarah Kelly took bronze, just ahead of Ciara Lee in fourth place.

Senior Sprint Challenge: In the mens 80m sprint, Tony Mahon edged out last years winner Aogan Farrell who took silver medal position. Patrick Lee won bronze, narrowly beating Michael O'Hare in fourth place. Last years silver medallist, Patrick Bates was suffering an injury, and finished just behind Paul Igoe in fifth and narrowly ahead of Tom Farrell. The senior ladies sprint was won by All Ireland medallist, Pauline O'Brien, pushed all the way by Pauline Harkin, finishing second. Bridie Farrell accelerated to the line to clinch bronze ahead of the closing group of Ann Kelly, Frances Farrell, Helen Murray and Maura Smith.

Road Championship:

The final race of the day was the U13 800m championship. The boys event was a high calibre tactical affair, with two All Ireland silver medallists taking to the line in Killian Moynagh and Paul Smith. Moynagh accelerated away at the start, and gradually increased his lead to win convincingly. In a tactical race, Tommie O'Brien led the chasing group, pursued by Paul Daly, Paul Smith and Brendan McCabe. With 150m to go, Daly struck for home. Brendan McCabe followed, and broke clear into second place. Paul Daly finished third, ahead of Tommie O'Brien, Paul Smith, Luke O'Brien, Michael O'Brien, Daniel Hartnett, Brian Crosson and Eugene Hughes. In the U13 Girls 800m, a tactical early race saw eight athletes grouped together into the final 200metres. Siobhan Smith was the first to kick for home, but was overhauled by the fast finishing Siobhan McGorry. Sinead McDonald came through to take bronze ahead of Grainne Boyle in fourth, Doireann Farrell, Cliona Farrell, Karen Kelly and Niamh McDermott.

Next Athletics Event The next event for local athletes is the Ulster Indoor Track trials at Antrim Forum on Saturday 2nd March.

All Ireland Success

Congratulations to Killian Moynagh, who won All Ireland silver at the National Cross Country championships over 1200m on Saturday 27th January, at Santry in Dublin.
This adds to his silver medal in the Ulster Cross Country championships before Christmas and bronze at Ras na hEireann two weeks ago.
In addition, Killian was part of the Cavan 4 x 500m Cross Rrelay team that took All Ireland bronze at the same venue on Sunday.

Also in action at the week-end, Dernakesh athlete Karen Kelly won silver in the Vertical Jump at the West Ulster Sportshall championships at Enniskillen, who wilth colleagues from the local athletics club, featured prominantly in the inter-county event
