Club Scene – 2008

Looking back at 2008, the followers of Drumgoon Éire Óg will probably feel that the season ‘got away from us’ as the Senior League campaign drew to a close.  It’s true that the early season form did indicate a strong Division 2 campaign was in the air, and in many ways, this was the case. But a narrow defeat to Intermediate Champions in Redhills in October, followed by an under-par performance in our only home defeat in 2008 against Cootehill, meant that Division 1 football for 2009 escaped our senior team.

However, looking across our club in 2008, we can see some positive trends, with evidence of an emerging pool of determined and talented players in most all of our nine core football teams, ready to supplement the undoubted ability of our senior squad.

Club Captain 2008

Adrian Crosson  performed well on and off the field for his club throughout the season

The 2008 season may have concluded in a disappointing fashion, but our senior teams (Division 2 & 5) scored 22 wins or draws in their 29 competitive outings in League and championship.  Coupled with this, a young U21 squad performed well to win their opening encounter and perform well in the second half against eventual winners Lavey.  At the same time, our minor squad were unbeaten on Boyle Park, and succumbed narrowly to eventual League winners Shannon Gaels in a close fought Semi Final in played Drumlane.

Drumgoon will have learned much from this years campaign and will look to put this learning into practice in the new season.

Scór Competition 2008

2008 was the year that saw Drumgoon return to competition in Scór na nÓg agus Scór Sinsear.

In Scór na nÓg, Lorraine and Gerard MacAdam contested the Instrumental Music category, while Lorraine accompanied Elaine Clerkin in the Solo Singing competition.

The Laurels flowed to Drumgoon in the Senior Scór competition, where Patrick Shalvey, Michael Shalvey, Ena Clerkin and Geraldine Shalvey won their Regional qualifier to take a place in the County Final.  Not to be out-done, the Bard of Laroween, Sean McGorry emulated this performance to also go forward to the County Final.  Patrick Shalvey then made it a hat-trick of finals with the solo-singing category win in the regional qualifiers.

Feile na nÓg - A success in Drumgoon

With Cavan hosting the Féile Péil na nÓg for the first time since 1983, Drumgoon were proud to play their part on the week-end of 4th, 5th and 6th of July.

With involvement from both the Girls and Boys, Drumgoon hosted in excess of 50 travelling players and more than a dozen visiting mentors, as Irish, UK and US teams took part in a festival of Football.

The Boys hosted Fermanagh U14 champions, Enniskillen Gaels while the Girls hosted Laois Champions and Féile finalists, Mountmellick.

Detailed planning and a huge work effort on the part of a dedicated team of club-members saw Boyle Park and its facilities looking resplendent over the week-end, while a team of volunteers ensured that no-one was left hungry on either Friday or Saturday during the course of the events.   This was followed on Saturday evening by a very enjoyable social function and Gallonray and a collective Mass on Sunday in Maudabawn.

The Féile Festival is a key-stone component in the GAA’s event calendar, bringing clubs, mentors and young players together from near and far in the name of sportsmanship and friendship.  Cavan County Board and especially Nicholas Walsh can be very satisfied with the results of their endeavour

To those club members, mentors and volunteers who gave so freely of their time to ensure that Féile would be a success in Drumgoon……..Thank You.

Drumgoon Ladies –

League & Championship Finals

The Drumgoon’s ladies, swept to an impressive League 3 Title in 2007, but looked nothing like new-comers in League 2 this year, as they swept to both league and championship finals under the stewardship of Michael Murray and Brain Bates.

And although the honors eluded the girls in this years finals, the effort and enthusiasm shown augurs well for the future of the womens game in the parish, no doubt spurred on by the recent performances of neighbouring county club Emyvale, in the All Ireland Intermediate final in November.

With a rich blend of youth and experience, the Drumgoon team boast County stars Siobhan McGorry at midfield, Niamh Farrell and Christine McCutcheon, with the emerging talent of Sarah McCabe, the experience of Ciara Farrell and Aisling McDermott, Theresa Clerkin, Cliona and Doireann  Farrell and Muireann McDermott.

Congratulations to Siobhán, Niamh and Christine, all of whom were part of the Cavan Ladies Team that won the Suzuki National League Title back in early summer

Minor & U16s

The Minor campaign kicked into life with integrated training with the Senior Squad in January, trained by Eddie Kelly and Coached by Finbarr Crowe.  The minors were unbeaten at home through the season, beating all-comers with strong displays of skill an determination.

Having defeated all of the other semi-finalists along the way, a confident Drumgoon Minor team contested their semi-final against Shannon Gaels, an in a game that swayed both ways, were defeated by 2 points by the eventual League winners.

The U16 squad contested a keen Division 2 league competition, securing wins over Knockbride, Killygarry and Lacken.

Both of these young Drumgoon teams will have more to offer in 2009.

Underage Boys & Girls

At underage level, Drumgoon continues to perform strongly, competing in Division 2 of the All County League.

In their League Campaign, the U14  boys squad had an impressive league campaign, taking the honors in their section of the league, only to loose out in the play-offs

Not to be out-done this season, the U14 girls graduated from last years Division 2 League title win, to contest this years Div 1 final in Breffni Park.  In a game that ebbed and flowed, Drumgoon had chances to but the honors, but on this occasion had to settle for the runner up position.  With their performances this season, this group of girls promise a bright future for ladies football in Drumgoon.

U13 & U12 competitions                                   At u12 level, the Drumgoon Boys and Girls, both graduated to the league Semi-final stages in Division 2, with impressive wins over Cootehill, Shercock, Killinkere, and Lavey.  Again in somewhat controversial circumstances which saw the semi final refixed and Drumgoon sent to the wrong pitch by the county Board, the team lost out narrowly to a Swanlinbar/Corlough combination.

Cubanna na nÓg – The Young Gaels                                          At development  level,  between  25 and  40 children  regularly  attended  the  Saturday training programmes over the Summer and Autumn period on Boyle Park, progressing to an indoor ‘Fitness, Co-ordination and agility sessions at Gallonray over the winter.                                                               Under the watchful supervision of coach  Mary McMullen, this eager group of Under 10’s are progressively coming to terms with the rudiments and fundamentals of the sport…..and having fun as they do.

Killian O’Connell Tournament  2008                        In  June,  Dernakesh  NS  retained  the Killian O’Connell Cup for U12 boys, defeating Knockbride in the  title event.

The U10 competition saw an exuberant performance by Dernakesh, St Michaels, Cootehill and Knockbride, in a round-robin tournament that saw Dernakesh and the combined Knockbride Schools contest the Mary Ann Sherry Cup final, with Knockbride edging the result with fine performances all round.

This Years Killian O’Connell Shield competition was played in the Camogie Code, with a re-match of the Cumann na mBunscoil Camogie Final between Dernakesh NS and Kill NS.  In a thrilling encounter, Kill edged the result with a brace of second-half goals, to reverse the result of the County Final two weeks earlier.
