Dundalk Racecourse 17/10/2009
"Gone to the Dogs", by Sean Mc Gorry
On the 17th October, they year 2009, a rare event took place
A man took to beat a greyhound, not with a stick but in a race

You probably think that I was drinking and had a fair auld thirst
You'll surely say that I'm on drugs, when I say the man came first.
It was a joint fundraiser for Dernakesh and Drumgoon Eire Og
Michael Andrew will be remembered as the man who beat the dog
The winning margin, it was fairly tight, the distance a short nose
Before the race Mike was led around by Tara, our Cavan Rose.

Me and Eugene went to Good Time Charlies, a taxi took us to the door
The music was good but fairly loud, my ears are still very sore.
It was packed from wall to wall, well that was my impression
Eugene says across the noise, not much sign of the recession.
This girl started dancing with me, she wasn't wearing much clothes
She had big rings in her eyebrows and a toplink throug her nose
She put her arms around me and whispered, your place or mine
I was surrounded by all the neighbours, I had no option but decline
Then she kissed me on the cheek saying, Hey make up your mind
in the finish up I had to tell her I was the other way inclined.

It was after four when I got home, there was a mist upon the bog
The wife says Christ your very late, I says Hannon bate the dog
Says she were you in a row, what's that red mark on your face
I says there was wet paint in Good Time Charlie's, yon's a lovely place
She says were you chasing after young ones coming home near five
You're like old shep chasing cars, but he never learned to drive
I hope they make this an annual event, for its a mighty show
but I must be on my best behaviour, or she'll hardly let me go
